On the eve of writing this article the 3i/Atlas comet/UFO/nobody knows what it is thingy passed by earth at its closest point, 170 million miles away. Inexplicably it slowed down, and for 14 minutes emitted some type of heat pulsating signal that has the best minds of astrophysicists, astronomers, NASA folks all baffled beyond words or even plausible explanations.
Well, the mysterious phenomenon obviously sparked much chat amongst everyone following this interstellar visitor, and many people were asking what do we do, or what should we say to it if they or it try to communicate. And I had an idea: why don’t we ask them if they know Jesus in whatever area of the universe they happen to live. Really, I think that is a great opening line of communication if they stop and want to chat. Why not?
Hopefully, they respond absolutely we do; but if not, then we get to tell them about Jesus. We could tell them how Jesus and His Father created heaven, earth, and all the universes and cosmos, and tell them about all the wonderful signs and wonders that Jesus did and how He loves them as His children and they can find peace in Him and with Him if they get to know Him. I think that would be a great opening line with our alien visitors, and I would really do that, no doubt.
But then I thought, what the heck, Frank Paul, you don’t even do that with your neighbors, or strangers you inadvertently bump into at the grocery store; and I felt bad, because I don’t speak about Jesus enough to others. I will write about Him, I will volunteer for Him in the service of others, I will have Bible chat get-togethers, but not too often do I verbally engage with absolute strangers about Him. That just isn’t right. As Paul wrote, faith comes from hearing about Jesus, and I and you must be the ones doing the talking so others can hear.
So what’s the point? This is supposed to be a Christmas message. The point is this: what better time of year than Christmas is there to speak about Jesus. Most people celebrate Christmas in one fashion or another and perhaps would be more receptive to hearing about the real reason for the season, we just have to take that leap and go for it. Is it difficult, yes; but are you alone, no? You can ask the Holy Spirit for guidance on what to say right before you say it. Please, Holy Spirit, let me say something to this person that will help them, will make them want to know Jesus more. I do that all the time when I am about to make a video for the Sower website, or write an article, or transport a wheelchair bound resident to Sunday mass. Please let me help them, Holy Spirit. Jesus, I could use your help to talk about You.
It might seem strange, but it is not. Jesus even said this when speaking to his disciples and sending them out to preach and heal. He told them they might get in trouble and dragged into court and must defend themselves. He said don’t worry or think about what to say, because the Holy Spirit will guide you in your words and bring to mind all that I have taught you. That is a comforting thought. We are not alone when we take that first step and actually speak to our neighbors and/or strangers about Jesus. Jesus is everywhere anyway; all we need to do is call on Him.
Let us use this Christmas Season of 2025 to be a bit bolder, lead by example more, speak more of the reason for the season, whether that is chatting with co-workers at the Christmas party, neighbors when you’re dropping off a gift, or any interstellar visitors that might happen to stop by. Faith in Jesus comes from hearing about Jesus, and hearing about Jesus must be from us who believe in Him. Just go for it, my friends. Hopefully, you will be pleasantly surprised and be helpful to someone who is a bit lost in this life, or sadder than normal because of the Christmas season. And if not, dust off your feet and move on to the next person; but at least you gave Jesus and the Holy Spirit a chance to reach someone.
Maybe it might not have seemed like it, but you probably planted a seed in that person’s mind that one day may sprout and their desire to know Jesus will shoot right through the soil of their mind and they’ll pick up a Bible or seek someone out for more information because of their curiosity.
My website is called The Sower of Seeds, and as we gardeners know all too well, some seeds sprout and some seeds don’t, but that does not stop us from planting.
Happy sowing, my friends; and have a blessed, Merry Christmas.
